The MINERVA project will conclude with a final workshop on mid-IR technology. The agenda will include presentations on:
-MINERVA hardware: mid-IR fibres; lasers, supercontinuum sources, components and detectors
-MINERVA applications: high resolution mid-IR imaging & spectroscopy, automated analysis of cell spectra for cancer diagnosis
-Expert guest speakers on mid-IR technology and applications

The event was held the day after Laser World of Photonics (and the parallel ECBO and CLEO Europe conferences).

The Mid-IR spectrum covering wavelengths from ~2 µm up to THz has become a region of increased interest in recent years. The region is rich in spectroscopic fingerprints of molecules, which are used to identify pollutants for chemical, environmental and medical diagnostics, for process control, as well as for safety, security and defense applications. This meeting will be focused on the most recent advances in mid-IR to THz science and technology, including the latest developments in solid-state, fiber, and semiconductor materials, novel laser sources, nonlinear frequency conversion techniques and parametric devices, as well as the application of mid-IR and THz sources in remote sensing, spectroscopy, frequency synthesis, imaging, and biomedicine.

Mid-Infrared Coherent Sources (MICS)

This OSA conference is very well aligned with MINERVA’s technology area and will present recent research into semiconductor sources, principally quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) and inter-band cascade lasers (ICLs) emitting in the mid-IR region. Further topics include sources in the terahertz region, and frequency conversion techniques in semiconductors. The use of mid-IR and terahertz sources for remote sensing, spectroscopy, imaging, and bio-medical applications will be presented.

Lasers, Optics and Photonics 2013

1st International Workshop on Spacetime Complexity in Optical Fibers

The scope of the workshop is to present the latest advances in the physics and technology of advanced optical fibers, including optical rogue and extreme waves, shock waves, speciality fibers, supercontinuum generation, fiber laser arrays, mode coupling effects in multimode fibers for spatial multiplexing, novel modulation formats and many other topics.

Workshop on Speciality Optical Fibres

This workshop will cover advances and new developments in specialty fibres. There are many topics of relevance to MINERVA, including new fibre design and fabrication, special cores, photonic crystal fibres, micro-structured fibres, nonlinear optics and wavelength generation.

G&H presented a poster on Development of low loss robust soft glass fiber splices at this event.

Nonlinear optical phenomena play a key role in several useful photonic applications. Such effects are now studied and applied over a wide range of energies and powers, from single-photons to zettawatts and above, and over broad spectral regimes, from THz to Gamma-ray frequencies.
DTU presented a paper on Numerical demonstration of 3-12μm supercontinuum generation in large-core step-index chalcogenide fibers pumped at 4.5μm

European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the International Quantum Electronics Conference

This event is the largest, most comprehensive and prestigious gathering of optics and photonics researchers and engineers organized in Europe in 2013. This photonics and quantum electronics event, covers the most up-to-date technical developments in these fields.
DTU presented a paper on Intensity Noise of Normal-Pumped Picosecond Supercontinuum Generation and a poster on Mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in tapered ZBLAN fiber with a standard Erbium mode-locked fiber laser

SPIE Defence, Security and Sensing

This large exhibition and conference includes many topics relevant to MINERVA, including sensing, detection, mid-IR and imaging technologies. The 500-company exhibition includes optics, lasers, sensors, image processing, spectroscopy, infrared systems and optoelectronic components.
IRnova presented a paper on High-performance MWIR type-II superlattice detectors [8704-33].

 

US-UK Workshop in Mid-IR to THz Technology and Applications
18-19 Feb-2013; Edinburgh, UK
This focused workshop is motivated by the fact that the mid-infrared and THz regions provide unique opportunities for applications in security (optical counter-measures, non-ionising body scanning), environmental sensing (DIAL aerosol sensing, spectroscopic stand-off detection) and medicine (tissue ablation, endoscopic surgery, dentistry).  The UK and US have substantial – and in many cases complementary – expertise in both sources and detectors for mid-IR and THz radiation.  The contribution that mid-IR and THz technology can make towards addressing strategic grand challenges in security, climate change and healthcare means that closer cooperation is likely to provide mutual benefits by accelerating research in these areas.

This is one of the major photonic trade shows anywhere in the world and covers a huge range of topics ranging from  biophotonics and biomedical optics, high-power laser manufacturing, optoelectronics, microfabrication to green photonics.

Cancer Diagnostics & Therapies

Biophotonics Concertation Meeting

2nd International Workshop on Opportunities and Challenges in Mid-infrared Laser-based Gas Sensing

The workshop target is to provide an overview of the state of the art in the field of laser-based detection of various gases with the absorption characteristics in the mid-infrared region. At the same time, the workshop will promote and encourage interactions between academic and industrial research institutions and will address scientific and technological challenges associated with both the latest developments and future prospects. The workshop is organized as a combination of plenary lectures given by world-renowned experts and short oral contributed presentations.
